The Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021

The education providers within UP Education abide by the Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021. The Code sets out minimum standards of advice and care that international students can expect and provides a procedure that you can follow if you have any concerns about your education providers and agents. Our responsibility for pastoral care of international students under the Code is for the duration of enrolment.

Insurance

In accordance with the Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021 and Immigration New Zealand requirements, all international students must have appropriate insurance during their enrolment.

UP Education has teamed up with one of New Zealand’s largest international student insurer, Allianz Partners offering (Studentsafe Inbound Learners) policies to UP Education students. It is an excellent policy which covers students during their journeys to and from New Zealand, and during their study here.

Pre-existing medical condition(s) are not automatically covered under the policy. Cover can be arranged in certain circumstances by completing a Medical Risk Assessment Form, this must be completed and forwarded to Allianz Partners within

a) 28 days of your arrival in New Zealand; or

b) 28 days of your first enrolment if you were not insured under a Studentsafe Inbound policy in the preceding semester and are already in New Zealand.

To make a claim, please visit here.

Acceptance of alternative insurance policies

International students may provide an insurance policy that is not arranged by UP Education. The insurance policy must be submitted before your enrolment is finalized and must comply with the Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021. The approval of the policy is subject to the International Admissions Manager. For more information, please contact [email protected]

Sonder Student Safety App

We have partnered with Sonder, a 24/7 personal safety and wellbeing service, to support all our international students. The Sonder app is for personal devices and has a number of features, like “Track My Journey” and “Check on Me”, that will help students live and study in New Zealand with confidence - if you are walking alone at night, going on a first date, or meeting up with a stranger to buy or sell goods, for example.

Additionally, if you are feeling stressed, anxious, lonely, or simply don't know who to turn to, you can speak to Sonder’s multilingual support team anytime via live chat or phone, and they can even send in-person assistance if you need it. You will receive an activation email or text shortly before orientation. If you don't get your email or text, you will be given a code to use at orientation.

Complaint

The Code signatories are required to have formal processes for handling learner complaints. If you have concerns about your education provider or agent, you should try and resolve it by using the internal provider process in the first instance which outlined in the Student Handbook. If your complaint is not resolved, you can take your complaint to NZQA who will process the complaint. NZQA is a government organisation, and they can provide an independent assessment of the complaint.
